Position Summary The primary function of this position is Sterilization Operator.
As needed, will also perform dental assistant functions to support the clinic and patient flow.
Provides efficient delivery of patient care and treatment while promoting good dental and oral health.
Provides efficient sterilization of all dental instruments for optimum patient and staff safety.
Essential Functions: • Coordinates the preparation of reports and written documentation including patient records as required by the department, company, state and federal agencies.
• Coordinates the preparation of reports and written documentation of sterilization cycles, spore test and maintenance.
• Performs a wide variety of patient care activities and assists chair side in the concept of six-handed dentistry.
Reviews patient records for accuracy and completeness; explains treatment recommended by the dentist in a manner that is understandable and supportive.
• Performs weekly spore test on all sterilization units.
Documents test result and obtain 2 supervision signatures on logbook.
• Maintains a smooth, constant flow of patients from reception to operatories; coordinates the activities of several operatories through the proper utilization of time, resources, abilities and patient needs.
• Operates x-ray equipment to make complete and/or selective oral radiographic services.
• Maintains all hand pieces through proper cleaning and lubrication.
Clean all sterilization units on a weekly basis.
• Arranges instruments in proper order in all cassettes.
Orders replacement instruments as needed.
Prepares dental equipment, instruments, material and operatories.
Performs routine maintenance of equipment and restocks materials.
• Ensures the established infection control techniques are administered in accordance with department policy to maintain a safe and pleasant environment.
Assists all dentist, hygienists and assistants with infection control questions and information.
• Maintains and submits orders to maintain an adequate inventory of dental materials, forms, clerical supplies and/or equipment • Complies with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards Other Responsibilities • Maintains and submits orders for replacement instruments as needed.
• Complies with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
• Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
• Attends Biennial 8 hour Oral Conscious Sedation Continuing Education course Supervisory Relationship Reports directly to Dental Clinic Supervisor.
Job Requirements: Certifications/Licenses Required: Dental Assistant Certification.
Radiation Safety Certificate.
Current CPR certificate.
Current PEARS certificate (or certified within 30 days of employment).
Experience Required (Minimum level of experience): At least 1 year as a DA.
Experience Preferred: At least 1 year in a pediatric dental office setting.
At least 1 year experience assisting with oral conscious sedation or IV sedation.
Experience with severely medically complex and/or children with development delay in dental or health setting.
Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job: Excellent communication skills.
Dental terminology.
Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job: Six handed dentistry, full scope dentistry procedures and oral radiographic services.
6 months to 1 year experience assisting with and monitoring Oral Conscious Sedation appointments.
At least 1 year experience with advanced protective stabilization.
Preferred: Computer skills involving word processing, Outlook email and dental management programs such as Dentrix.
Medical terminology.
At least 1 years’ experience working with special needs/medically compromise patients.
At least 6 months experience assisting with Orthodontics.
At least 6 month of experience assisting with endodontic procedures on permanent teeth with immature roots.
Equipment Used: PC, Fax, other equipment, dental laboratory equipment, X-ray machine, Amalgamator, Assistina, Ultrasonic Cleaner, Autoclave and other sterilization equipment.
Reliable Transportation: Ability to travel to other clinic locations for a half or full day on short notice if needed.
If traveling by means of a personal vehicle, you must have a valid driver’s license and proof of current auto insurance.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of standing and sitting, occasionally lifting objects of up to 25 pounds, and physical restraint of patients.
Ability to put pediatric patients at ease and give clear understandable directions of treatment recommended by dentist to the patients/parents.
Rady Children’s Hospital Compliance Requirements: Proof of Influenza Vaccine for current Influenza Season, Hep B (declination or proof of series), proof of vaccine for MMR or titer showing immunity, proof of current TB (within the last year), proof of vaccine to Varicella or titer showing immunity, proof of Tdap vaccine (within the last 10 years), drug screening, criminal background check to occur upon hire and annually thereafter.
