Principle Design and Test Engineer
JOB SUMMARY:
The Design Engineer initiates and develops designs, procedures and techniques involving complex mechanical and opto-mechanical systems; conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs; directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication; and, oversees the accuracy and maintenance of design data.
Assignments are outlined in terms of broad specifications, objectives, anticipated results and critical reference points requiring special attention.
The Design Engineer is an independent producer, serving as a reliable resource of engineering knowledge and support, applying the latest technological advancements to the job as appropriate.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Responsible for the design, development, documentation and test of highly complex, high-accuracy, multi-disciplinary electro-opto-mechanical and mechatronic systems.
· Responsible for requirements analysis and allocation, design synthesis, trade studies and selection of optimal design solutions across the functional, performance, cost and schedule domains.
· Responsible for maintaining complete and accurate design data including: solid models; drawings; procurement and fabrication specifications; quality assurance requirements and inspection specifications.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
· 20 years or more of relevant complex systems design and CAD experience.
· BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 15 years or more of relevant experience required.
May substitute equivalent experience in the field.
· 2-3 years’ experience with 3D metal printing and additive manufacturing preferred.
· Active Security Clearance preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
TECHNICAL
· Design and implementation of: sealed atmosphere, environmentally controlled process chambers; thermal management systems; transport and control of high mass elements (10-20 tonne); and structural and seismic foundations and supports (20-50 tonne).
· Expert-level proficiency in modern computer aided design (CAD) tools, specifically, Solidworks and Solidworks PDM; integration of large, complex systems; interface specification and management; product breakdown structure (PBS) and bill-of-materials (BOMs); tolerance stack-up analysis and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T); development of procurement specifications, fabrication drawings, quality assurance (QA) requirements; and, cost, schedule and risk estimation.
· Demonstrated ability to develop design solutions employing structured systems engineering best practices and/or processes in accordance with relevant standards including: ANSI-EIA-632, IEEE Std 1220; ISO/IEC 15288; NASA Systems Engineering Handbook or similar.
TEST & EVALUATION
· Design and development of mechatronic test systems for the verification and validation of system functionality and performance characterization including: test requirements analysis and allocation; safety requirements; test plan and procedures development; test stand design; test integration and checkout, test execution; and, reporting.
· Execution of complex system and subsystem level testing in accordance with authorized test plans and procedures.

· Salary Range: $131,000 - $159,000 annually (starting salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the candidate, and alignment with market data).
· In addition to a salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus based upon company performance.
