I’m a mindfulness coach, teacher and avid meditator with over 10 years of teaching experience.
I’m passionate about helping individuals at all skill-levels wake up, understand their own minds, and realize their full potential.
There is no experience more rewarding than guiding a student from a place of anxiety and frustration, to confidence, calm, and mastery.
I offer individual coaching and training, as well as a drop-in class on Monday evenings.
►Mindfulness - Meditation My approach to personal development is systematic and science-oriented, and I’ve also taught advanced mathematics for over a decade.
The meditation techniques I teach are demonstrably effective, and are backed by modern scientific methods and the wisdom of traditional lineages.
Meditation is about waking up to the realization that every moment is a wondrous unfolding, a continual evolution, and an awe-inspiring spectacle.
Meditation practices are designed to help you calm the mind (through concentration) and then gain the insight that frees you from the obsessive nature of thoughts.
Many of us are addicted to thinking – once we learned how to think, we couldn't stop.
Beyond the veil of thoughts lies a truly magnificent experience of wholeness and connectedness with everything that exists.
Contact with this deeper experience of reality is the goal of meditation.
My Teaching Experience Includes: - Teaching weekly meditation courses for small and large groups - Coaching mindfulness and other personal development techniques and strategies individually with students and clients - Working with business professionals and other high-performers to increase their performance even more - Using analytic tools to identify strengths and problem areas to create learning plans for students at every level of practice My Appoach: I offer group classes and individual coaching for students wishing to learn more about meditation and personal development.
My approach is grounded in both modern scientific research and the ancient wisdom of traditional buddhist lineages.
Combining these approaches into an integral framework allows me to offer tailored guidance to you, regardless of where you are.
The Four Pillars: 1\.
Establish a regular formal practice – Practice at least 30 minutes per day formally (sitting or slow walking meditation).
2\.
Practice in daily life and background practice – also practice in the background and do micro-meditations throughout your day as frequently as possible.
3\.
Retreats/Extended Practice Periods – attend 7 days of retreat per year (not necessarily all at one time).
Retreats can give you extended periods of time to concentrate, which if you've never tried can be an incredibly peaceful and rewarding experience.
4\.
Guidance – checking in with an instructor several times per year.
Receiving guidance from a good teacher can accelerate your progress dramatically – you'll receive tailored guidance and personal recommendations for specific practices.
► Meditation and Metacognition The common core that ties together the whole spectrum of this integral approach is metacognition – the ability to understand the mind, and adapt thinking patterns for a more healthy lifestyle.
Metacognitive skill means to look inwards and understand our own thinking process, and this is a skill that can be developed through deliberate practices.
Meditation is a process of training the mind to reflect more carefully and deliberately, and overcome the minds natural tendency towards distracted attention and compulsive, circular thinking.
Metacognitive training through meditation allows you to see a version of reality beyond the thoughts that usually lead to anxiety and frustration.
Your thoughts won't completely disappear – this is a common misconception about meditation.
However, you'll gain the necessary distance from your thoughts to see them objectively, and feel the freedom to choose which thoughts guide your life.
► Learning To Pay Attention Do you think paying attention is a skill that can be developed through practice? Learning to pay attention is one of the most critical life-skills that no one ever learns.
In this culture, the ability to pay attention is treated as a gift or natural talent that some people have and others don't.
In a traditional meditation setting, in contrast to our usual notion, learning to pay attention is considered a fundamental skill that should be learned and practiced.
Modern neuroscientific research has discovered that several brain regions (Anterior cingulate cortex, medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex) are involved with attention and executive functioning.
And these are the exact brain regions that expert-level meditators activate when they meditate (in fact, some meditators have increased activity in the brain's attentional nodes even when they aren't meditating).
This unique approach to meditation focuses on the critical skill of paying attention and treats it as an ability that develops over time.
Much like learning to play an instrument or studying mathematics, students who commit to the four pillars will definitely see long-term improvements in skill level.
If you feel distracted, disorganized, scatter-brained right now – well, this could change if you practice wholeheartedly.
Contact me to see how this radically different approach can change your relationship to your own mind, and turn you into the genius you always knew you could be.
***CONTACT ME*** Please write to me through the craigslist system as well as: whiteside(dot)danielj (at geemale)(I've misspelled the word as the craigslist filter doesn't allow me to post the full name).
The craigslist system is not always reliable, so by writing through 2 systems, I'm most likely to receive your inquiry.
