This position has the option of being fully remote or work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at UCSD Campus and remote.
DESCRIPTION The Department of Neurosciences is a large department within the UCSD School of Medicine, comprised of 661 Faculty, Research and Project Scientists, Postdocs, Clinical Education, Administrative and Business Office staff, and Research lab staff.
Research revenues are ~$50M, Clinical revenue is ~$6M, Rady Children's revenue is ~$3.
5M, VA Clinical Faculty Revenue is ~1.
1M.
The Department’s faculty and divisions are sited on-campus in UCSD Sites in La Jolla and Hillcrest, Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego (RCHSD), VA Hospital and other sites throughout San Diego County.
The Department’s mission is to create the synergies and define the ideas and programs that allow to transform the way Neurosciences community discovers, teaches and cares.
The Department of Neurosciences strives to deliver the highest quality clinical care to patients, conduct cutting-edge science and research and train the next generation of neurologists and researchers by fostering education at all levels and integrating the latest scientific and medical advances into the curriculum.
Under the direction of the Director of Finance and Operations, leads organizational objectives and supervises the daily operation of the financial and administrative functions of the Departments Research Unit.
The Department of Neurosciences Research Unit has annual expenditures of nearly $50,000,000 Direct Cost.
This position will train and supervise approximately 10 sponsored projects staff in the areas of pre-award and post-award contract and grant administration.
Responsible for the establishment and management of all sponsored projects in the Department, and for systems of reporting and ensuring financial and administrative controls for all sponsored project funding.
Manages the liability of the budget process related to sponsored research on faculty salary worksheets.
Maintains relationships with all fund managers who support Neurosciences faculty, even in other departments.
Monitor and advise Director of Finance/Ops and Administrative Vice Chair on any fiscal issues on any funds managed by the Neurosciences Research Administration Unit.
Primary communications support for Research related policy and procedure input.
Represent the Department on committees and meeting with health sciences and campus research administration.
Supervises staff of Research Administrators working on grants or contracts according to established policies and management guidance.
Recommends changes to department policies and practices.
Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals.
Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.
Identifies risks and responds accordingly.
Provides priority setting and work flow analysis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Nine (9) years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in a relevant area plus five (5) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience/training.
Working knowledge of contracts and grants transactions and applicable financial systems, as well as related policy, accounting and regulatory compliance requirements.
Proficiency in use of common desktop / web applications.
Knowledge of university information systems (Ex: OFC, UCPath, Concur, Kuali, Cognos, Tableau etc) as well as extensive knowledge and experience of standard financial management and database reporting tools.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply sponsor, institutional and departmental policies.
Knowledge of current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
Ability to manage high volume and complex transactions.
Ability to perform highly complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
Thorough knowledge of policy and its interpretations.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
Demonstrated advanced competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
Strong interpersonal skills, service orientation, ability to multi-task effectively in a varied, high volume environment, judgment and decision-making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and effective verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of academic and staff personnel management concepts and policies in a university setting.
Knowledge and/or experience managing in a union environment.
Experience managing in a diverse workforce environment.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, work groups, and committees and to act productively as part of a group, under pressure to meet established deadlines, effectively and accurately with frequent interruptions.
Strong knowledge and experience with university regulations and systems, particularly in the area of Extramural Funds, contracts and grants, and general accounting.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $91,300 - $170,700 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $43.
