DESCRIPTION Seventh College’s theme, "A Changing Planet" encompasses a broad range of pressing global issues such as the climate crisis, mass migration, and rapid cultural and technological change.
The goal of Seventh College is to help students acquire the skills needed to confront these challenges.
Building upon their expertise in their major field of study, students are encouraged to approach large-scale, global problems from an interdisciplinary perspective and are given numerous opportunities to gain critical academic and real-world skills through project-based learning and research.
The staff provide programs and services that support this academic mission by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.
Serve as first point of contact at Seventh College.
Oversee the flow of students through the advising reception area.
Field questions from students, staff, and the general public in person, over the phone, and via e-mail.
Advise students on college and university requirements, policies, and procedures.
Coordinate meetings between students and academic advisors.
Participate in the planning, preparation, and implementation of new student orientation programs.
Assist with all student enrollment activities.
Provide work direction for peer advisor staff.
Offer administrative support to the Dean and Assistant Dean including collecting data and compiling statistical reports, preparing petitions for review, and assembling materials for meetings and events.
Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
Proven ability to advise students on University and college requirements, policies, and procedures.
Experience in higher education environment and/or familiarity with UC San Diego administrative and academic organization and operations, such as the UC San Diego undergraduate college system.
Knowledge of UC and the department / school / college.
Understanding of higher education goals, structure, and functions.
Proven experience in planning and organizing meetings and events.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proven ability to understand, remember, and explain detailed information orally and in writing with accuracy and clarity.
Ability to proofread and correct written work.
Knowledge of standard correspondence formats.
Interpersonal skills.
Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills (poise, active listening, diplomacy, patience, discretion, assertiveness) to effectively interact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in-person, by telephone, and via e-mail.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Demonstrated skill in managing heavy workload and handling multiple tasks with potentially competing deadlines, while maintaining accuracy.
Strong ability to exercise independent initiative and sound judgment within general guidelines with the acumen and sensitivity to assess and identify those situations and decisions which require higher level approval or consultation.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.
Proficiency in using computer for word processing, data entry, spreadsheets, e-mail, electronic calendar, internet searches, and website maintenance.
Experience with or ability to learn Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to compile data and provide detailed statistical reports.
Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective electronic filing systems.
